Monmouth Pottery/Western Stoneware Co.

The Monmouth Pottery company was founded in 1892 in Monmouth,Illinois. Until 1906 when it was purchased by Western Stoneware Co. (they also acquired 6 other small pottery companies at around this time), Monmouth was noted for its utilitarian ware. Monmouth became the ‘Artware Division’ of Western Stoneware Co. This division was discontinued during the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Its mark, the maple leaf was used until 1930. If the words ‘Monmouth Co.’ appear as part of the mark, the piece was made before 1906. After that year, the embossed mark became ‘Monmouth Western Stoneware’, however a paper label may, on occasion, appear bearing the words ‘Monmouth Pottery, Monmouth, Ill.’ Many pieces produced in the late 1930s are unmarked, but are identifiable due to the glazes and the clay used in production.

I have a large vessel that has the marking Western Stoneware Co. Monmouth Ill.s. Trying to determine it value. Any suggestions?

    • Hi Jack,

I would be happy to assist you by determining a value for the Monmouth item. If you could send me a photo of the item with a second picture of the bottom to BillyBlueEye@cox.net I will consult my resource books. I will try to get you a fair retail price and If I am unable to help you I can offer some additional ideas on ways to appraise your ceramic collectibles. If you live in either Los Angeles or one of the Orange County cities, I know of an antique store that offers monthly appraisals by professionals for a small fee.

I have a mixing bowl, golden brown clay with dark maroon glaze, ribbed pattern. The mark on the bottom is a 1″x1″ raised maple leaf with the w in the middle. Can you date this mark, please.

I have a dull green classic-style urn, 6.5″ tall x 6″ wide at the handles. It has two paper labels, one on the bottom and one on the side; both say Monmouth Pottery. The label on the side also says, “Will Not Leak” and the one on the bottom also says “Monmouth, Ill.” Any idea of the date of mfgr and value?

I have a western Stoneware piece the is off white/light gray with a Maple Leaf and “u.s.a” . There is a red circular logo which reads “BOSTON” using the pottery color to spell . The circular red symbol outlines the word “Boston” I cannot find it anywhere on line . And looked for logos for businesses and can’t find. It also looks fairly new but I read it there is Maple Leaf it was was made before 1930 . I can provide picture if thAt helps. It’s in a smaller pot I think baked beans usually go in (with two small handles on each side of the opening . Can hold aprox 16 oz of liquid in it. Thank you

    • Hi Ryan, there isn’t much information available about Monmouth and Western Stoneware unfortunately. WS did create commemorative work for specific retailers and I imagine that your pot is one of those. For whom and for what are the unknowns. I found some on eBay by searching for Monmouth Pottery—decorative dinnerware, serveware; it might be a source of information for you. Wish I could be of more assistance. Robert
