Beautiful Royal Copley Art Deco Vase – Tonight’s “Super Special”

royal copley art deco vase

Royal Copley Pottery, c.1945-55,  7″ White & Black Art Deco Round Pillow Vase from the Riddle Pattern, List Price $ 85.00 SOLD!

Today’s offering was produced by Royal Copley (1941-57) which was created by the Spaulding China Company of Sebring, Ohio by Morris Feinberg.  About 85% of what was made at Spaulding was released under the “Royal Copley” name with the remainder under “Royal Windsor” which was a division of Copley that released specific patterns. The Art Deco influenced disc vase comes from the “Riddle Pattern” which had a series of Deco influenced vase shapes offered in black and white or black and pink color schemes.  The black and white vases are significantly more difficult to find.  The vase is unmarked but well documented in reference books and is bottom finished in a manner that is distinctive and unique to Royal Copley items. The vase has moderate crazing and one production glaze pop on the front side of the vase.

The footed bowl was hand painted in an abstract, playful black and white design giving the work an Atomic Ranch, Eames Era look. (The mold number) An original “Beswick Ware” label is still affixed to this terrific Mid Century Modern work.

Howard Pierce c.1945-50 – 9.5″ x 6.5″ Speckled Green Arcature vase w/ Horse & Tree, Item number P-500, List Price $225.00 SOLD!

Today’s second offering is this increasingly rare Arcature Vase made by Chicago born Howard Pierce (1912-94) who was at the forefront of the California ceramic movement creating stylized, distinct porcelain sculptures of animal, bird and human subjects. He was admired by his peers for his creation of many unique glaze processes and his ability to oversee all areas of product production up to the placement of finished works in only the finest gift shops and department stores nationwide.

In the early 1950s Howard created limited edition Arcature Vases taking snapshots of animal life and recreating scenes in the center of well crafted vases. Each finished product looked like a still life freeze in a television screen, a novelty in the early ’50s.. The tableau used in the this vase is a horse and old tree with gnarled branches. This speckled green glazed vase frames the silken white horse and tree beautifully. It is in-mold marked “Howard Pierce Claremont, Calif. # P-500.”

The Billy Blue Eye team is also adding new inventory to our individual pottery company pages. Mid-Century Design: Has the Revival Run it’s Course?

“I’m looking for a mid-century _______________ (lamp, vase, bowl, chair, table, wall hanging, sculpture…) You can fill in the blank with your item of choice as this statement continues to be heard from customers on a regular basis.

Is it that the styling of the 1950’s and 1960’s was so magnificent that no other artistic and creative expression will do? Or is it perhaps a longing for  a time that seemed so much easier, less complex, with a very sophisticated yet funky vibe? Perhaps it is a combination of both but I sense that with the current unease in all aspects of life in the early 21st Century the revival of all things Mid-Century does bring us some sense of the familiar, (well familiar to us Baby Boomers!) and a reassurance that we are and will be okay.
