Royal Haeger, c.1940’s, 8″ Ballerina in Tutu with Art Deco Disc Vase – unmarked but in Reference Books, List Price $119.00, Super Special Price $ 75.00  SOLD!

The perfect gift for your little Ballerina or for one that appreciates the Art of Dance from the Royal Haeger Pottery CompanyDavid Haeger opened a brick company providing building materials to reconstruct Chicago after the fire of 1871.  As time progressed and an appreciation for his fine craftsmanship grew he expanded his business into the art of ceramics.

Noteworthy designers have worked for Haeger, including Royal Hickman (1938). One of Haeger’s  art pottery divisions, Royal Haeger, carries his first name.  Royal was known for his ability to capture the spirit of the Art Deco movement into his designs. This 1940s figural work is most likely a Royal Hickman design although I have been unable to find credit given to him or any other designer.  It features a ballerina dressed in a tutu next to a disc-shaped vase. The vase not only draws from Art Deco design but a strong Edgar Degas influence should be noted as well. Although unmarked, it is well documented in Haeger reference books.  This example, offered in a soft sage green stands about 8″ tall and is in superb condition.

Selling the “Blues” at the Long Beach Antique Market

During those lazy summer afternoons in suburban Chicago during the 1960’s when our gang of friends had settled under the Dutch Elm Tree in our front yard we’d frequently play  a question and answer game that eventually when we grew into our early teens became “truth or dare”. But in those earlier times when really knowing your best friend meant the world to you, the questions were fairly tame by today’s standards. The object of the game was to see who knew who best and by winning you could claim the title of “Best Friends” until the next round of the game was played in a few days or sometimes in a week or two.

Red Wing Pottery by Rum Rill, c.1925-1937 8.75″ Double Loop Handled Dutch Blue Stipple Glazed Fan Vase, mold #692, $130.00  SOLD

One of the questions that was frequently asked was, “What is my favorite color?”  As any one of the players that had visited my bedroom could tell you, the answer was blue;  blue walls, blue bedspread, blue curtains, blue throw rug and yes, even blue pajamas.

It should come as no surprise to you, my dear readers, that if you were to ask me today, “What is your favorite color?”, the answer would be….wait for it…can you guess….why yes, it is blue.  And again it should come as no shock to you then that in my personal collection of pottery that color is very well represented indeed.

Mid-Century Design: Has the Revival Run it’s Course?

“I’m looking for a mid-century _______________ (lamp, vase, bowl, chair, table, wall hanging, sculpture…) You can fill in the blank with your item of choice as this statement continues to be heard from customers on a regular basis.

Is it that the styling of the 1950’s and 1960’s was so magnificent that no other artistic and creative expression will do? Or is it perhaps a longing for  a time that seemed so much easier, less complex, with a very sophisticated yet funky vibe? Perhaps it is a combination of both but I sense that with the current unease in all aspects of life in the early 21st Century the revival of all things Mid-Century does bring us some sense of the familiar, (well familiar to us Baby Boomers!) and a reassurance that we are and will be okay.

Red Wing Pottery c.1953-58 11.5" Mid-Century "Starburst" Vase by Charles Murphy, $105.00 SOLD

Billy Blue Eye believes that the interest in Mid-Century design will be with us for a number of years to come and we strive to offer fine examples of ceramics from that era. Many of these vases, candle holders, plates and objets d’arts will be on display and available  for purchase this Sunday, October 16th at the Long Beach Flea Market.

Tustin Flea Market – June 26th Features Newly Acquired Weller, McCoy, Roseville and Van Briggle Vases

Brush-McCoy Pottery, c.1920-30's 5.75" Blended Greens & Blues Onyx Vase. Mold #749, $90.00 SOLD

Every once in awhile we stumble across some truly beautiful and unique items, usually from an unexpected source which helps to make the find even more special.  A recent shopping expedition produced a number of terrific items that will be offered for the first time this Sunday, June 26th at the Tustin Flea Market in Tustin, California, a.k.a. The Jamestown Vintage Flea Market.

Van Briggle Pottery, c. Late 1980's 8.5" Southwestern Motif Vase in Ming Turquoise Glaze by Finisher CB (Clare Beyers), $195.00 SOLD

One special find were two Weller Loru vases from the late 1930’s. When we first noticed them we were struck by how similar the glaze color was to the Mulberry Glaze being employed by Van Briggle during the same time period. I am sure it was one of those “secret glazes” that mysteriously made an appearance at a rival pottery company. Ah the espionage of the mid 1930’s pottery business!

Weller Pottery, "Loru" c.1933-39 8" Footed Vase with Raised Leaves and a Flared Rim in Mulberry Glaze, $105.00 SOLD

Weller Pottery, "Loru" c.1933-39 5" Footed Planter - Vase with Flared Rim in Mulberry Glaze, $70.00 SOLD

So if you’d like to stop by and let us tempt you with our newly acquired treasures we can be found tomorrow, Sunday, June 26th at the Tustin Flea Market, 474 El Camino Real, Tustin from 8:00 AM until 3:00 PM, free admission.  Space #45. We hope to see you there!

Long Beach Antique & Collectible Market Today: Name the Designer

Royal Haeger Pottery c.1940’s 11″ Turquoise Double Leaf Vase w/ Original Label designed by Royal Hickman, $70.00 SOLD

We have all experienced it in one way or another. That “ah-ha” moment when we see something say a painting and we realize (or is it recognize?) that we are not only looking at a beautiful painting of Irises; but that we are looking at the painting of Irises by Van Gogh.  So too for a collector of pottery there comes a time when we begin to look past the color and size of say a vase, and see the true talent being expressed by an artist at work.

All pottery companies employed such people – artists that helped to define the look of a pottery company and whose work helped that company gain notoriety.  As my collecting of pottery has evolved, I find pleasure in seeking out those signature works by the  artists, craftsmen and designers that define a time period or an overall thrust of the pottery companies body of work.

One such individual who did just that was Royal Arden Hickman (1893-1969) who brought his signature style to many works produced by Haeger Potteries (Dundee, Illinois) during his tenure with them from 1938 into the early 1940’s. His work was so important to the overall art pottery line produced by Haeger that his designs were issued under the “Royal Haeger” name. A line that today still carries his playfulness and sense of drama.

Van Briggle Pottery c.1946-48 7.75" Hand Thrown "Original" Ewer in Mulberry Glaze by Clem Hull, $150.00 SOLD

So today. weather permitting, when you are shopping the Long Beach Antique & Collectible Market, take some time to seek out special pieces of pottery and see if you can name the designer. In time you will see what one individual brought to the company and begin having those “ah-ha” moments of, “Yes, that Van Briggle ewer is a hand thrown Clem Hull work.”

Marc Bellaire c.1991 6.5" Hand Thrown & Painted Unique Vase - Made just prior to his death 1994, $160.00

The Long Beach Antique & Collectible Market is being held today, Sunday, March 20th from 6:30 AM to 2:00 PM in the Veteran’s Stadium Parking lot. Be sure to visit our green and white tent, rain or shine, located in booth #A-853.
