In 2013 we saw a renewed interest in one of the lesser known but widely collected and prized American pottery companies.  Red Wing Pottery (1878-1967) made  Red Wing, Minnesota, a city better known for shoes, its home and began an art pottery line in 1929.  Under the direction of George Rumrill, Red Wing produced a series of Rumrill releases from 1932 until 1937.

Rum Rill for Red Wing Pottery, c.1932-37, Pair of 10.25″ Ewers w/ Embossed Acanthus Leaves, Mold #448, Back side and View of Handles

This beautiful pair of classic Roman pitchers are footed and embossed with acanthus leaves, a favorite decoration used by Rum Rill and others in the 1930s and ’40s. The pair is finished in the Pompeian glaze an ivory-colored base that has been wiped with a brown over-glaze that helps to highlight the pattern. Both of the ewers are faintly bottom marked “Red Wing 448” and are in exceptional condition.

1940’s Royal Haeger Ballerina Vase

Royal Haeger, c.1940's, 8" Ballerina in Tutu with Art Deco Disc Vase - unmarked but in Reference Books, List Price $119.00, Super Special Price $ 75.00

Royal Haeger, c.1940’s, 8″ Ballerina in Tutu with Art Deco Disc Vase – unmarked but in Reference Books, List Price $119.00, Super Special Price $ 75.00  SOLD!

The perfect gift for your little Ballerina or for one that appreciates the Art of Dance from the Royal Haeger Pottery CompanyDavid Haeger opened a brick company providing building materials to reconstruct Chicago after the fire of 1871.  As time progressed and an appreciation for his fine craftsmanship grew he expanded his business into the art of ceramics.

Noteworthy designers have worked for Haeger, including Royal Hickman (1938). One of Haeger’s  art pottery divisions, Royal Haeger, carries his first name.  Royal was known for his ability to capture the spirit of the Art Deco movement into his designs. This 1940s figural work is most likely a Royal Hickman design although I have been unable to find credit given to him or any other designer.  It features a ballerina dressed in a tutu next to a disc-shaped vase. The vase not only draws from Art Deco design but a strong Edgar Degas influence should be noted as well. Although unmarked, it is well documented in Haeger reference books.  This example, offered in a soft sage green stands about 8″ tall and is in superb condition.

Red Wing Pottery, c.1940’s Double Candleholders 5.5″ x 3.75″ x 2.5″, Light Blue semi-gloss Glaze, Item #397, List Price $99.00, Super Special Price $69.00
SOLD!

Red Wing Pottery (1878-1967) of Red Wing, Minnesota began art pottery production in the 1920’s. Red Wing’s designers created items that were always evolving with the fashion of the day. Offered here is a pair of 1940s candleholders that together will hold four candles. The design offers a blending of floral stems rising from a leaf embossed base to the candle cups. They are finished in a soft pale blue semi gloss glaze finish. The glaze application is slightly uneven which is a 1940s production norm that does not detract from the beauty of the pair. They are both bottom incised (one extremely faint)”Red Wing 397.” (The mold number)

We sincerely hope that these two terrific ceramic items would make a wonderful gift for that special someone or maybe just an addition to your home and holiday table.  If you have any questions you may e-mail us direct at BillyBlueEye@cox.net.

Roseville Pottery, c. 1948 "Apple Blossom" Bud Vase, Mold #, 381- 6, List Price $205.00, Daily Special Price $130.00

Roseville Pottery, c. 1948 “Apple Blossom” Bud Vase, Mold #381- 6, List Price $205.00

Our first Super Special for Monday, December 9th  is from one of Billy Blue Eye’s  favorite American pottery companies – Roseville.

Roseville Pottery (1890-1954) is considered to have been one of America’s finest Art Pottery firms and certainly one of its most loved by ceramic collectors world wide. The “Apple Blossom” pattern was first introduced in 1948 and quickly became one of the most popular lines of its time. Collectors were attracted to the hand-painted twig handles, a design feature that is still admired today. This 6.25″ bud vase comes from a crisp mold and is precisely painted. Finished in a Terra-cotta colored glaze the vase is moderately crazed, typical for this pattern, and is bottom incised “Roseville U.S.A. 381-6.”

RumRill Blue Stipple Tulip Vase c.1938-42

Rum Rill Pottery, c.1938-41, 9″ Footed Tulip Vase in Dutch Blue Stipple Glaze, List Price $95.00

George Rumrill was commissioned by Red Wing Pottery of Red Wing, Minnesota to produce a series of Rumrill releases under the Red Wing name from 1932 until 1937. At the end of his tenure with Red Wing he returned to Zanesville, Ohio and led Rumrill Pottery into a productive and creative period known as the Ohio Years. During this time a distinctive Rumrill line was successfully introduced that allowed Rumrill to become a respected producer of utilitarian ceramics and Art Pottery.

This 9″ tulip inspired vase is a product of the Ohio Years (1938-1942) and is finished in the Dutch Blue Stipple glaze, one of Rumrill’s most distinctive finishes.  Rising from its base the vase unfurls in a scalloped rim. It is in excellent overall condition but does have production pin hole glaze pops which are frequently found in Rumrill ceramics produced during this period. The vase is faintly bottom incised “Rumrill H-11.” (The product number)

howard-pierce-1950s-arcature-vase

Howard Pierce c.1945-50 – 9.5″ x 6.5″ Speckled Green Arcature vase w/ Horse & Tree, Item number P-500, List Price $225.00 SOLD!

Today’s second offering is this increasingly rare Arcature Vase made by Chicago born Howard Pierce (1912-94) who was at the forefront of the California ceramic movement creating stylized, distinct porcelain sculptures of animal, bird and human subjects. He was admired by his peers for his creation of many unique glaze processes and his ability to oversee all areas of product production up to the placement of finished works in only the finest gift shops and department stores nationwide.

In the early 1950s Howard created limited edition Arcature Vases taking snapshots of animal life and recreating scenes in the center of well crafted vases. Each finished product looked like a still life freeze in a television screen, a novelty in the early ’50s.. The tableau used in the this vase is a horse and old tree with gnarled branches. This speckled green glazed vase frames the silken white horse and tree beautifully. It is in-mold marked “Howard Pierce Claremont, Calif. # P-500.”
