To All Our Tustin Flea Market Friends & Patrons

Yes it has been a number of months, three to be exact, that we have  filled space number 46 at the Tustin Flea Market and to all of our loyal customers and friends we too have missed you! In fact I was planning on a joyous return today, October 28th, but once again fate has intervened and caused us to miss today’s event.

Scheurich of Germany, c.1960’s 9″ Mid-Century Lava Glazed Vase/Ewer by Heinz Siery Mold #271-22, $69.00 SOLD

Last week I took a funny step down on my left leg and heard a”pop” which was followed by intense pain and an inability to walk or put any of my, well let’s just say, over 200 pounds weight on it.  After a trip to the ER on Monday it turns out that I sprained my knee and have spent the better part of this last week in bed, in a medication fog and only able to get around on crutches.  The parting words from the ER nurses mouth were, “Remember, a sprain can take longer and be more painful than a break”,  and no truer words have ever been spoken.

Weller Pottery, c.1934-39 “Panella” 8″ x 7″ Wall Pocket with Nasturtiums, superb condition $195.00 SOLD

Of course this  makes it impossible for me to set up shop today in Tustin but come rain, or sleet, or dark of night, I will be healed and ready to see all of you on November 25th in Tustin or the week before, November 18th in Long Beach. We have recently acquired a number of great items and look forward to assisting you in your holiday shopping.  If you are looking for something in particular, e-mail us and we will be happy to assist in finding that special item. Best wishes to all of you and thank you for your continued interest and support of Billy Blue Eye.

Revisiting Hull Pottery – Shop Today Tustin Flea Market

Hull Pottery was founded in 1905 by Addis Emmet Hull in Crooksville, Ohio and is considered to be one of the “Ohio Four” in Classic Americana Pottery.  The other three being McCoy, Roseville and Weller.  As with all collectibles Hull Pottery has seen it’s demand rise and fall over the years and recently we are seeing a rebirth of popularity.

Hull Pottery, c. 1958-60 “Tokay & Tuscany” 8″ Basket, mold # 6, $85.00 SOLD

For me Hull’s strength has always been it’s ability to capture a piece of Americana expressed through classic roots as displayed in their “Tokay and Tuscany” line which for me is an American interpretation of Classic Italian forms and design.  Look at the “Parchment and Pine” series and you see a nod to the American West with boot shaped pitchers decorated with pine cones and rolled parchment deeds.

Hull Pottery, c. 1951-54 “Parchment & Pine” 14.25″ Ewer, Mold # S-7, $170.00 SOLD

Hull Pottery remained in business until 1986 and created not only sophisticated ceramic pieces but also playful utilitarian items. You can see a display of Hull’s work offered for sale today, June 24th at The Jamestown Vintage Flea Market   where 50 plus vendors set up shop at 474 El Camino Real, Tustin from 8:00 AM until 3:00 PM.  Look for our green and white tent, we hope to see you there!

Hull Pottery, c. 1958-60 “Tokay & Tuscany” 10.5″ Moonbasket Vase, Mold #11, $150.00 SOLD

Beswick Pottery – One of the Many Fine Ceramic Companies Available in Tustin Sunday, April 22nd

One of the very pleasant surprises for me in my own pottery collecting was the discovery of Beswick Pottery.  Beswick (1894-2002) was a family run business founded by James Wright Beswick with his son’s John and Gilbert, and John’s son John Ewart, they all played a part in the factories fantastic successes.

Beswick Pottery, c.1957-72 By Albert Hallam in ’57 6″ Double Handled Urn Vase, Mold # 1496-3, $80.00 SOLD

The business ran from the Gold Street Works as ‘J. W. Beswick’ until about 1918.  The firm gradually expanded its activities after the 1914-1918 war, in fancy pottery for the home and over-seas markets.

J. W. Beswick died in 1921 and his son in 1936. The Company was then made a Limited company – John Beswick, Ltd.  created with the Managing Director, John Ewart Beswick and his Sales Director Gilbert Beswick who introduced many new pieces to the range.

Beswick Pottery, c.1959-67 by Albert Hallam in 1959 10″ Gun Metal Luster Glazed Vase, Mold # 1654, $129.00 SOLD

Arthur Gredington was appointed modeller for animals of all kinds and is well known for this superb work of accurate and realistic animals. James Hayward also contributed to the high quality pieces as decorating manager from 1934 to art Director from 1957 he designed almost 3,000 decorations, patterns and glazing.

Beswick Pottery, c.1963-68 by Albert Hallam 8″ Goblet Vase with Original Label, Mold #1858, $95.00 SOLD

Albert Hallam contributed enormous skills when joined Beswick at the age of 14 as apprentice mold maker and he became head of mold making and a modeller, creating butterflies, horses, dogs and cats as well as fine art pottery vases, bowls and serving pieces.

Beswick wares were extremely popular in England and abroad offering one of the finest ranges available, they achieved remarkable success with highly specialized lines including life-like equestrian figures, dogs modeled from famous prize-winners, birds in great variety, wild and domestic animals, fish,  salad ware and cottage ware including Beatrix potter collection.

In 1969 Beswick was sold to Royal Doulton animals continuing to produce new models but reducing the number of patterns and withdrawing many pieces. By August 1989, the decision was taken for all Beswick to be produced under the Royal Doulton back stamp.

Beswick Pottery, c.1940-72 by Mr. Symcox in 1940 9″ Fan Vase with Scalloped Lip, Mold #844-2, $139.00 SOLD

Billy Blue Eye is pleased to offer a fine selection of vintage vases from Beswick Pottery today, April 22nd at the The Jamestown Vintage Flea Market   where 50 plus vendors set up shop at 474 El Camino Real, Tustin from 8:00 AM until 3:00 PM.  In addition to Beswick we carry Roseville, Weller, Van Briggle, McCoy, Red Wing, Rookwood and many more fine American Art Pottery Companies.
