Roseville Donatello Vase is Today’s Super Special Collectible

Roseville Pottery, c. 1915-18, "Donatello" 8.25" Footed Vase w/ Flared Lip, List Price $225.00, Super Special Price $135.00

Roseville Pottery, c. 1915-18, “Donatello” 8.25″ Footed Vase w/ Flared Lip, List Price $225.00

Roseville Pottery (1890-1954) is considered one of America’s finest art pottery firms and is loved by ceramic collectors worldwide. The “Donatello” pattern was designed by Harry W. Rhead and was produced for a decade. It was Roseville’s first major success. The pattern consists of a cherub playing a lute in a snapshot scene separated by trees. This 8.25″ (h) footed vase has a slightly flared rim. The vase comes from a very crisp mold and production can be pin-pointed to before 1918 as this vase is bottom marked in a manner that wasn’t used after that year. The bottom has an embossed circle that reads “Donatello R P Co” as well as an ink stamped logo “Rv“. The vase is in very good condition with minimal crazing and a few production glaze skips and drips that were frequently seen during the early years of Roseville’s existence.  The vase from a certain angle looks to have a slight lean, mentioned only for accuracy as it does not in any way detract from the charm and beauty of this vase.  In fact, it sets it apart from other examples!

Red Wing Pottery, c.1940's Double Candleholders 5.5

Red Wing Pottery, c.1940’s Double Candleholders 5.5″ x 3.75″ x 2.5″, Light Blue semi-gloss Glaze, Item #397, List Price $99.00, Super Special Price $69.00
SOLD!

Red Wing Pottery (1878-1967) of Red Wing, Minnesota began art pottery production in the 1920’s. Red Wing’s designers created items that were always evolving with the fashion of the day. Offered here is a pair of 1940s candleholders that together will hold four candles. The design offers a blending of floral stems rising from a leaf embossed base to the candle cups. They are finished in a soft pale blue semi gloss glaze finish. The glaze application is slightly uneven which is a 1940s production norm that does not detract from the beauty of the pair. They are both bottom incised (one extremely faint)”Red Wing 397.” (The mold number)

We sincerely hope that these two terrific ceramic items would make a wonderful gift for that special someone or maybe just an addition to your home and holiday table.  If you have any questions you may e-mail us direct at BillyBlueEye@cox.net.

Great Holiday Gifts at the Long Beach Antique Market Sunday, December 18th

We invite you to join us in a year-end celebration and sale at the Long Beach Antique Market this Sunday, December 18th.  All of us at Billy Blue Eye are most thankful to our faithful clients, collectors and friends that have helped to make this a terrific year.

Rum Rill (Red Wing) Pottery, c.1930’s 7″ Dutch Blue Stippled Vase, Mold #630, $115.00 SOLD

We began 2011 by setting up a  booth for the first time at the Del Mar Antique Show & Sale held on the beautiful Del Mar Fairgrounds. The three day event introduced us to our neighbors to the south in San Diego County and we are hopeful to include another visit  in our 2012 show schedule.

We also enjoyed the relaxed and friendly atmosphere at the spring and fall Whittier Street Fairs where we found that the love of antiques runs strong in that historic city. We set up shop at the Rose Bowl in July for the first time and were amazed at the sheer size of it all; so much to see, so many people to meet and yes so little time to shop.

“Hawaiian Hut” An Original Watercolor by James Coleman, c. 1980’s, $2,899.00

We became a “regular” vendor at the “best little Flea Market in Orange County” held in Tustin on the fourth Sunday of the month where we reconnected with some of our OC clients and of course we faithfully pitched the familiar green and white tent at the Long Beach Antique Market the third Sunday of every month.

“Hawaiian Hut” Original Watercolor by James Colemen – Close-Up View

The Long Beach show held at Veteran’s Stadium just off Lakewood Boulevard at Conant Street is open from 6:00 AM until 2:00 PM. (Visit the Long Beach Antique Market website for a discount entrance fee coupon.)  Each month we look forward to this event as it is our “favorite” show not only for the quality and quantity of great antiques and collectibles but more importantly because of the terrific people we have met and we look forward to see each time that we are there.

Beswick Pottery of England, c.1934-40 by Mr. Symcox in 1934 6.25″ Drip Glaze Bud Vase, # 193, $80.00 SOLD

So please join us at this last Long Beach show of 2011 as we celebrate the Holiday Season by bringing out our very best original artwork, ceramic and stoneware items many from our personal collections and available for a limited time only. You will find beautiful, unique gifts for that special someone at all price points. Maybe you’ll even be tempted to treat yourself to that Van Briggle vase you’ve been dreaming about. We offer a liberal exchange policy so just in case Aunt Lisa doesn’t share the same enthusiasm you have for mid-century design she’ll be able to select another ceramic turtle to add to her brood.

Red Wing Pottery, c.1950’s 10.5″ Hand painted “Accordion Man” by Belle Kogan, # B1417, $150.00 SOLD

We wish to take this opportunity to offer a sincere, heartfelt thank you to you our readers, collectors and friends for trusting us and for shopping with us when one has so many options be it virtual or brick and mortar storefronts. We wish each of you a Happy Chanukah, the Merriest of Christmases and a New Year filled with the happiness of a life filled with love, kindness and peace.

Springtime Rituals and the Pouring of Tea – April, 2011 Events

With the arrival of spring and the upcoming religious celebrations of Passover and Easter later this month (April 19th and April 24th respectively) I have been thinking about the many rituals that we have incorporated into our daily lives. Just like these two holidays that are centered around a meal (the Seder and the Last Supper) many of life’s other rituals are celebrated with food, drink and sustenance to feed our bodies while our souls and hearts are being fed and nourished by community, friendship and family.

A selection of Tea Sets from England, Japan, Canada and Czechoslovakia. The Candle holders are by Frankoma Pottery of Oklahoma, c. 1951-78 5.5" Prairie Green Glaze, $39.00 for the pair.

To the British and to many of those that reside in former British colonies one important daily ritual is “afternoon tea”.  The daily “pouring of the tea” is an important ritual that brings cohesion to the often busy, chaotic and fragmented lives we live. It is a time to reflect on the day and at times to bring one back to a starting point where we can proceed renewed and nourished to complete the remainder of the day before us.

(Pictured Lower) E. Radford Pottery Company of England, c. 1920-30s 4 piece Set of Hand-Painted Art Deco Teapot w/ Lid, Sugar & Creamer, $130.00 (Pictured Above) James Sadler of England, c. 1960-70s Transfer Flow Blue Porcelain,"Afternoon Tea - The Old Mill" Six Piece Set, Teapot w/ Lid, Sugar Bowl w/ Lid, Creamer & Tea Pot Stand (not pictured), $140.00

It is not surprising to those of us that collect and admire ceramics that over the years there have been many different design styles employed in the creation of the vessels used to prepare and serve tea. Tea rituals are rooted deep in the history of many countries of the world with the creation of teapots and bowls designed with the ritual in mind.   The Eastern cultures of China and Japan document that  tea was introduced in as early as the 8th Century with the Japanese Tea Ceremony finding its roots in the 12th Century.  The ceremony also known as the Way of Tea embraced the principles of harmony, respect, purity  and tranquility.

Japanese c.1948-55 Hand-painted Lusterware Tea Set - Tea Pot w/ Lid, Sugar w/ Lid & Creamer, $80.00

Here in America tea drinking is a part of the culture so much so that it played a major role in the America Revolution with the Boston Tea Party. Later it was immortalized in the song “Tea for Two” from the 1925 musical “No, No Nanette” with words by Vincent Youmans and lyrics by Irving Caesar.

I’m discontented with homes that I’ve rented
So I have invented my own.
Darling, this place is lovely oasis
Where life’s weary taste is unknown
Far from the crowded city
Where flowers pretty caress the stream
Cozy to hide in, to live side by side in,
Don’t let it apart in my dream-

Picture you upon my knee
Just tea for two
And two for tea
Just me for you
And you for me alone.

Are you having a hard time finding the perfect gift for that special someone that seems to have everything?  Too often we forget that gifts need not be brand new. Frequently the gifts that become life-long treasures are those that have been passed down from generation to generation. Shopping at the Long Beach Collectible & Antique Market offers one that type of option, of finding an item that becomes a generational gift.

Red Wing Pottery c.1920-30 10" Fish Handled Pitcher/Vase in Ivory with brown wipe glaze, $145.00 SOLD and c.1920-30 Semi Matte Ivory colored w/ brown wipe Candle holders, $85.00 (Not Pictured in Table-setting)

For me, my most cherished Christmas memories revolve around the dinner table. As a child it was my maternal Grandmother that prepared a traditional Polish Christmas Eve Banquet. In attendance were my five cousins and their parents, four siblings, Mom and Dad and of course the hostess and my Grandfather.  Being the second oldest of the children it wasn’t long before I was invited to the “adult table”. Sitting there, usually perched on a phone book or two, I was in admiration of the beautiful serving dishes, vases, candle sticks and other decorations that adorned the holiday table. So much so, that they began to symbolize what Christmas meant to me and their appearance on the dinner table enhanced the feeling of celebration.

Red Wing c.1950's 14" Ivory Cylinder on a Base Vase designed by Charles Murphy, $85.00 SOLD

As a young adult and years after my grandparents had passed, I annually recreated that Christmas meal complete with a keen and careful selection of items used in the table setting. Some items were passed down to me, others were carefully chosen to help set the festive mood, maintain the color scheme, and offer my guests the same feeling that this was to be a special and memorable meal. (And yes, they usually were.)

Billy Blue Eye Pottery has a wide range of ceramic items that can begin to take on that special meaning which helps create the atmosphere of “Christmas”, “Hanukkah” and all of the celebrations you hold dear. Pictured in this blog entry are a number of Red Wing Pottery items formally of Red Wing, Minnesota as well as items created for Red Wing during its’ partnership with Rum Rill Ceramics.

Red Wing c.1936 Two Piece Centerpiece w/ Stag Flower Frog in Ivory w/Brown Wipe over-glaze, $90.00 SOLD and a Rum Rill c.1930's Pair of 6.5" Triple Candelabras w/ original label, $110.00 SOLD

In addition to Red Wing and Rum Rill, Billy Blue Eye will be offering a selection of ceramic treasures from Roseville, Van Briggle, Weller, McCoy, Catalina by Gladding McBean, Beswick of England, Rookwood, Sascha Brastoff, Royal Haeger, Frankoma, Blue Mountain of Canada and Camark at Sunday’s Flea Market.

Red Wing c.1927-35 6" x 3" Grape Cluster Candle holders in Ivory w/ brown over-wipe, $50.00 and Red Wing c.1927-35 10" Vintage Grape Cluster Bowl in Ivory with brown over-wipe. $65.00 SOLD (Not Pictured in Table-setting) Three Piece Set (Pictured Above), $100

These great gifts and wonderful works of art are available by contacting us directly at billyblueeye@cox.net and  will be available for viewing this Sunday, December 19th at the Long Beach Antique & Collectible Market.
