Some Favorite Rumrill Vases Available Today at the Long Beach Antique Market

We all have our favorites.  From early on beginning in grade school we witnessed the concept of the chosen few in witnessing or being the “teacher’s pet”.  Certain bonuses or advantages were awarded ones that attained that role and we learned to apply that concept in many areas of our lives.

Even in collecting pottery we apply the “teacher’s pet” principle to the items in our collection we value the most by rewarding them the most visible display shelf. For me a few of my Rumrill vases have become “teacher’s pet and they proudly great visitors to my home in a most conspicuous place of honor.

Three Rumrill vases, c. 1938-42 (from left to right) 9″ Pale Blue Art Deco Vase, mold # H-8, $ 75.00; Miniature 4.25″ Vase with Partial Original Label, mold #A-5, $ 45.00; and 6″ Fan Five Finger Bud Vase from “Manhattan Group”, mold # 541, $100.00 SOLD

Today at the Long Beach Antique Market we will be offering some of our very favorite Rumrill vases and yes they will be displayed in a very prominent location. The Long Beach Antique Market  is held in the Veteran’s Stadium parking lot just off Lakewood Boulevard at Conant Street and is open from 6:00 AM until 2:00 PM. Beswick Pottery – One of the Many Fine Ceramic Companies Available in Tustin Sunday, April 22nd

One of the very pleasant surprises for me in my own pottery collecting was the discovery of Beswick Pottery.  Beswick (1894-2002) was a family run business founded by James Wright Beswick with his son’s John and Gilbert, and John’s son John Ewart, they all played a part in the factories fantastic successes.

Beswick Pottery, c.1957-72 By Albert Hallam in ’57 6″ Double Handled Urn Vase, Mold # 1496-3, $80.00 SOLD

The business ran from the Gold Street Works as ‘J. W. Beswick’ until about 1918.  The firm gradually expanded its activities after the 1914-1918 war, in fancy pottery for the home and over-seas markets.

J. W. Beswick died in 1921 and his son in 1936. The Company was then made a Limited company – John Beswick, Ltd.  created with the Managing Director, John Ewart Beswick and his Sales Director Gilbert Beswick who introduced many new pieces to the range.

Beswick Pottery, c.1959-67 by Albert Hallam in 1959 10″ Gun Metal Luster Glazed Vase, Mold # 1654, $129.00 SOLD

Arthur Gredington was appointed modeller for animals of all kinds and is well known for this superb work of accurate and realistic animals. James Hayward also contributed to the high quality pieces as decorating manager from 1934 to art Director from 1957 he designed almost 3,000 decorations, patterns and glazing.

Beswick Pottery, c.1963-68 by Albert Hallam 8″ Goblet Vase with Original Label, Mold #1858, $95.00 SOLD

Albert Hallam contributed enormous skills when joined Beswick at the age of 14 as apprentice mold maker and he became head of mold making and a modeller, creating butterflies, horses, dogs and cats as well as fine art pottery vases, bowls and serving pieces.

Beswick wares were extremely popular in England and abroad offering one of the finest ranges available, they achieved remarkable success with highly specialized lines including life-like equestrian figures, dogs modeled from famous prize-winners, birds in great variety, wild and domestic animals, fish,  salad ware and cottage ware including Beatrix potter collection.

In 1969 Beswick was sold to Royal Doulton animals continuing to produce new models but reducing the number of patterns and withdrawing many pieces. By August 1989, the decision was taken for all Beswick to be produced under the Royal Doulton back stamp.

Beswick Pottery, c.1940-72 by Mr. Symcox in 1940 9″ Fan Vase with Scalloped Lip, Mold #844-2, $139.00 SOLD

Billy Blue Eye is pleased to offer a fine selection of vintage vases from Beswick Pottery today, April 22nd at the The Jamestown Vintage Flea Market   where 50 plus vendors set up shop at 474 El Camino Real, Tustin from 8:00 AM until 3:00 PM.  In addition to Beswick we carry Roseville, Weller, Van Briggle, McCoy, Red Wing, Rookwood and many more fine American Art Pottery Companies. Recent Weller Pottery Acquisitions

Every now and then when shopping for vases I  stumble upon one that really causes me to understand why I can become so very passionate about pottery and building a pottery collection. Frequently that vase will wind up in my personal collection or be offered to a specific client that may have expressed a strong interest in the maker or in the style of vase that I have come across.

When I first saw this blue Weller “Bouquet” vase I was initially drawn to the color. If you have read my past blog entries you know that I love blue and all things blue. This blue Weller vase is that special blue that immediately transports me to a summer sky or to the calmest of mountain lakes. I was immediately hooked and knew I had to have this vase and I had to share this vase with my customers. So it is making its debut at this Virtual Flea Market and I hope you see just how beautiful of an example it is.

Weller Pottery, c.1935-39 “Bouquet” 12″ Art Deco Column Vase with Tulips #B-11, $275.00 SOLD

Questions??

E-mail us direct at BillyBlueEye@cox.net or call 949-842-8732.

Weller Pottery, “Darcie” c.1935 6.5″ Light Blue Vase, $100.00 SOLD

Weller Pottery, c.1914-27 “Roma” 7.75″ Double Bud Vase, $130.00 SOLD

The “Hudson” series of vases all have some hand-painted elements to the design. Each vase is therefore unique and unto itself. The 1920’s releases of “White and Decorated Hudson” and “Blue and Decorated Hudson” vases have a special charm and the delicate usage of simple brush strokes make them exceptionally unique. This example, which has been pictured in this blog before, is truly a wonderful find and deserves a prominent home in one’s collection.

Weller Pottery, c.1920’s “White and Decorated Hudson” 8.5″ Cylindrical Vase, $259.00 SOLD!
