“Down Under” Ceramics Make Debut at Long Beach Flea Market Today

Diana Pottery of Sydney c.1940’s 6.5″ Art Deco Pitcher, $110.00

Over thirty-five Vintage and antique vases, bowls, plates and other ceramic items from Australia are being offered by Billy Blue Eye Pottery for the first time today at the Long Beach Antique and Collectible Market.  The collection, which has taken over twelve months to amass, is a very good representation of what the Australian Ceramic community has offered in the last eighty years.

Modern Ceramic Pottery of Sydney c.1946-57 9.5″ x 4.5″ Art Deco Wall Pocket, $150.00, SOLD

There are examples from fifteen Pottery Companies including Diana Pottery, Pates Pottery and Trent Artware all of Sydney; the renown John Campbell & Sons Pottery, McHugh Brothers Pottery and Port Arthur Pottery of Tasmania and Bennetts Pottery of Adelaide, South Australia. Included in this collection are a number of vases that display the beautiful color mixing and drip glaze techniques first introduced by John Campbell in the early part of the 20th Century. The depth of color obtained can only be truly enjoyed in person as the play with light on the surface of the item also changes its’ visual perception.

Taking Another Look at Weller Pottery

My childhood was spent in Chicago-land and I began collecting pottery and ceramics at the age of seventeen.  When shopping the many local antique stores that housed a century of treasures I was always drawn to a uniquely shaped or exquisitely colored vase. I quickly learned to ask the proprietors if they had any vases from Ohio which to me meant, “Do you have any Roseville or Rookwood?” If directed to a Weller vase or worse yet, a McCoy planter I would approach it as if it were one of Cinderella’s ugly stepsisters. Yes, I must confess, I was a Roseville and Rookwood Snob!

Weller Pottery "Loru" c.1933-39 9.5" Vase with raised leaves & flared rim, $135.00 SOLD

Ah, that feels so much better! Step one, admit you have a problem!

As the years passed and with the onset of some serious pottery and fine art collecting, I was reintroduced to Weller by an antique shopkeeper in Orange, California. She helped me see the subtlety of a Weller creation, the delicate swirl of the lines and the silhouette that the potter created. She showed me the vast diversity in the Weller collections and before long I knew that Weller needed to be included in my collection of Ohio made vases, candlesticks, planters and urns. I left her shop that day with a 1930’s Weller “Bouquet” vase that to this day sits proudly on a chest of drawers in my foyer.

Weller Pottery, "Bouquet" c. 1935-39 8" vase, mold #B-3, Private Collection

Weller Pottery, c.1935-39 "Bouquet" 4.5" Bowl/vase with Pansies, Mold #B-4, $110.00, SOLD

Over the last four years through the purchases I have made for Billy Blue Eye Pottery, I have come to possess a rich appreciation for the craftsmanship and pioneering spirit shown in the many  unique techniques, glazes and formulas employed by Weller. Recently we had an opportunity to acquire a number of Weller vases created in the 1930’s from an estate which we are offering for the first time at the upcoming Long Beach Antique & Collectible Market. Some of these new acquisitions are pictured here and hopefully you too can see why I have had to take another long look at the artistry of Weller Pottery.

Weller Pottery, "Cornish" c.1933 6" Planting Pot/Vase in Blue, $165.00 SOLD

I hope that seeing some of these lovely vases has sparked a renewed or “first-time” interest for you, dear reader, in Weller Pottery.  The Weller vases pictured here  will be available this Sunday, July 18th, at the Long Beach, California  Antique & Collectible Market.  Held from 6:30 AM to 2:00 PM in the Veteran’s Stadium Parking lot, visit our green and white tent,  booth A-853.  Let me show you why I took another long look at Weller and came back with a deeper appreciation for one of the “other” Ohio pottery companies.

Newly Acquired Roseville Vases Available at Long Beach Flea Market

Roseville c. 1915-1931 "Carnelian II" 8" Fan Vase Mold # 54-8 $340.00 SOLD

We bought our first Roseville vase twenty-eight years ago in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at an Antique Barn just off the tollway. It was on a whim as we hadn’t planned on stopping or shopping on our way home to Chicago. The vase,  a Snowberry Urn, to this day stands proudly on our fireplace mantel joined by fifteen other Roseville treasures. We paid all of $25.00 for it and at the time that was a lot of money. But it has given us many years of pleasure by showcasing countless hand-picked bouquets from the gardens we have tended.

To this day each time I purchase a Roseville vase, console or candle holder something inside of me is stirred. Sometimes it’s an appreciation of the design lines, other times a sense of awe at the way Roseville was able to capture the beauty of so many floral gifts of nature. A sense of time in history is often stirred by a particular pattern: the simplicity of the Arts & Crafts period shown in the Green & Color Matte series of vases or the right-on-target Art Deco expressions in the Futura Line. I suppose it is for these reasons that Roseville has become my benchmark for evaluating all other pottery. I suppose that it is the reason that Billy Blue Eye proudly offers such a wide selection of Roseville Pottery at the monthly Flea Markets in Long Beach, California.

Roseville Pottery c. mid 1920's "Dahlrose" 6 inch Bud Vase Mold # 363-6, $195.00 SOLD

The three Roseville vases pictured here are new acquisitions and will be available this Sunday, February 21st, at the Long Beach  Antique & Collectible Market.  Held from 6:30 AM to 2:00 PM in the Veteran’s Stadium Parking lot, visit our green and white tent,  booth A-853. In addition to Roseville Pottery, Billy Blue Eye will have over 300 pottery items for sale including McCoy, Weller, Beswick, Royal Haeger, Van Briggle, Red Wing, Catalina, Bauer, and Rookwood vases, bowls, wall pockets and art objects.

Completely Seduced

c. 1992-1998 Bill Campbell 9" Twisted Vase, small K11, $85.00 SOLD

You will be completely seduced by this Bill Campbell vase. His use of vibrant colors and an elegant crisp form draws you into his playful world. Bill has been a potter for over 30 years experimenting and creating unique glazes that allow light to dance over the surface of his vessel. His work references the fluid forms and colors of  L. C. Tiffany.

Created in 1992 and produced until 1998, the K11 small “Twisted Vase” has been retired from production. The unique twisting pattern draws your eye around and around the vase enticing you with the changes in color. This 9″ vase has a dry bottom and is signed by Mr. Campbell. (The signature is unfortunately barely visible, but there nonetheless.)

Bill Campbell 9" "Twisted Vase" Dry Bottom & Signature

Bill Campbell 9" "Twisted Vase" Top Detail

Mr. Campbell works in his studio, a converted old powerhouse, in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania. In his biography that appears on his website he writes, “My motive in making pottery is not terribly noble.  I merely try to cause a little celebration in everyday living. You can’t imagine what I feel when my customers tell me how much they enjoy using my pots in their daily routine. When designing pots, I am always aware of the possibilities and limitations of the wonderful/dreadful layered glaze I employ. An enigmatic mistress, it is very fussy about the body it resides upon.  It often crawls, blisters and crazes and the color isn’t always reliable. Though demanding, it is however, just too vibrant and exciting to simply dismiss as too troublesome.”

c. 1992-1998 Bill Campbell 9" Twisted Vase, small K11, $85.00 SOLD

Billy Blue Eye Pottery is proud to offer this beautiful example of Mr. Campbells’ work for $85.00. For more information and/or to purchase this vase, contact us directly at billyblueeye@cox.net.  We accept MasterCard, Visa, Discover and Pay Pal and offer a full refund if not satisfied.  The vase is in excellent condition and other than than fading signature has no imperfections. We would like to offer a huge “thank you” to our friends Linda and Carl in Georgia and to Judith, who has worked for Campbell Studios for eighteen years, for their kind assistance in researching this vase.

Beswick Pottery’s “Zorba” Sixteen Piece Coffee Service Contains Strong Greek Inspiration.

c. 1970-73 Beswick Pottery "Zorba" 16 piece Coffee Service $190.00

Pottery designer Graham Tongue created the thirty-two items for the “Zorba” dinnerware line of England’s Beswick Pottery in 1968. The name itself conjures up Greek origins and visions of passionate dancing complete with plate breaking. Offered here is the sixteen piece Coffee Service produced by the company from 1970 to 1973.  Originally produced in two colorways, brown and olive green, both in a gloss finish. The decoration used geometric shapes of circles and triangles to create a border pattern for various “modern” shapes.

The brown finish, called “bronze,” was probably the “in color” at the time, and this is the color most often found today. The bronze items came in different combinations, one shade all over, dark brown and light brown (like this set), or in some cases three shades of brown. The dark brown has a satin matte finish.

Beswick Pottery was founded by James Wright Beswick in 1896 although some historians say 1894. In 1898 a premises was opened on Gold Street, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, England, still the home of Beswick today although it operates under the umbrella of the Royal Doulton Group.

Beswick "Zorba" Open Sugar Bowl & Cream Jug Set

Throughout most of the 20th Century Beswick created beautifully decorated quick-selling lines of vases, pots, jugs, tea pots, trinkets and dinnerware. An early (1930) ad line read, “Everything the householder needs in earthenware”. The company employed many noted pottery designers including James Hayward, Albert Hallam, Mr. Symcox, and Mr. Watkin. These men were always given credit for their lines and many early collectors followed a specific designer.  To this day the best resourse book on the company, The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Beswick Pottery, by Diana and John Callow gives designer credit on each item featured in their excellent reference book.  In 1969  Beswick was sold to the Royal Doulton Group.
