Great Holiday Shopping at the Long Beach Antique & Collectible Market – Sunday, December 19th.

Saturday, December 18th – Update on Long Beach Antique & Collectible Market:
Although we were ready to load the van today and ride out tomorrow’s deluge, common sense and the threat of strong wind gusts during tomorrow morning’s rain storm have prevailed and caused us to reconsider and decide that we WILL NOT attend the Long Beach Flea Market.

We send our sincere apology to our treasured clients and friends and hope that any gift giving plans will not be greatly affected. We  do offer to e-mail photos of available ceramic items and ship any purchases to arrive before Christmas. We will ship free on orders of $200.00 or more and do accept Visa and Master Card. If you would like us to assist you in this manner, please call us at 949-496-1889, Pacific Time (9am to 9pm) or e-mail us direct at billyblueeye@cox.net.

Are you having a hard time finding the perfect gift for that special someone that seems to have everything?  Too often we forget that gifts need not be brand new. Frequently the gifts that become life-long treasures are those that have been passed down from generation to generation. Shopping at the Long Beach Collectible & Antique Market offers one that type of option, of finding an item that becomes a generational gift.

Red Wing Pottery c.1920-30 10" Fish Handled Pitcher/Vase in Ivory with brown wipe glaze, $145.00 SOLD and c.1920-30 Semi Matte Ivory colored w/ brown wipe Candle holders, $85.00 (Not Pictured in Table-setting)

For me, my most cherished Christmas memories revolve around the dinner table. As a child it was my maternal Grandmother that prepared a traditional Polish Christmas Eve Banquet. In attendance were my five cousins and their parents, four siblings, Mom and Dad and of course the hostess and my Grandfather.  Being the second oldest of the children it wasn’t long before I was invited to the “adult table”. Sitting there, usually perched on a phone book or two, I was in admiration of the beautiful serving dishes, vases, candle sticks and other decorations that adorned the holiday table. So much so, that they began to symbolize what Christmas meant to me and their appearance on the dinner table enhanced the feeling of celebration.

Red Wing c.1950's 14" Ivory Cylinder on a Base Vase designed by Charles Murphy, $85.00 SOLD

As a young adult and years after my grandparents had passed, I annually recreated that Christmas meal complete with a keen and careful selection of items used in the table setting. Some items were passed down to me, others were carefully chosen to help set the festive mood, maintain the color scheme, and offer my guests the same feeling that this was to be a special and memorable meal. (And yes, they usually were.)

Billy Blue Eye Pottery has a wide range of ceramic items that can begin to take on that special meaning which helps create the atmosphere of “Christmas”, “Hanukkah” and all of the celebrations you hold dear. Pictured in this blog entry are a number of Red Wing Pottery items formally of Red Wing, Minnesota as well as items created for Red Wing during its’ partnership with Rum Rill Ceramics.

Red Wing c.1936 Two Piece Centerpiece w/ Stag Flower Frog in Ivory w/Brown Wipe over-glaze, $90.00 SOLD and a Rum Rill c.1930's Pair of 6.5" Triple Candelabras w/ original label, $110.00 SOLD

In addition to Red Wing and Rum Rill, Billy Blue Eye will be offering a selection of ceramic treasures from Roseville, Van Briggle, Weller, McCoy, Catalina by Gladding McBean, Beswick of England, Rookwood, Sascha Brastoff, Royal Haeger, Frankoma, Blue Mountain of Canada and Camark at Sunday’s Flea Market.

“Down Under” Ceramics Make Debut at Long Beach Flea Market Today

Diana Pottery of Sydney c.1940’s 6.5″ Art Deco Pitcher, $110.00

Over thirty-five Vintage and antique vases, bowls, plates and other ceramic items from Australia are being offered by Billy Blue Eye Pottery for the first time today at the Long Beach Antique and Collectible Market.  The collection, which has taken over twelve months to amass, is a very good representation of what the Australian Ceramic community has offered in the last eighty years.

Modern Ceramic Pottery of Sydney c.1946-57 9.5″ x 4.5″ Art Deco Wall Pocket, $150.00, SOLD

There are examples from fifteen Pottery Companies including Diana Pottery, Pates Pottery and Trent Artware all of Sydney; the renown John Campbell & Sons Pottery, McHugh Brothers Pottery and Port Arthur Pottery of Tasmania and Bennetts Pottery of Adelaide, South Australia. Included in this collection are a number of vases that display the beautiful color mixing and drip glaze techniques first introduced by John Campbell in the early part of the 20th Century. The depth of color obtained can only be truly enjoyed in person as the play with light on the surface of the item also changes its’ visual perception.

Mashman Regal Artware, c.1932-36 3.25″ Vase #174 Intricate Glaze Pattern & Art Deco Lines – Sydney, $95.00

Bennetts Adelaide, c.1930’s 6.5″ Wall Pocket or Standing Fan Vase, $119.00

Taking Another Look at Weller Pottery

My childhood was spent in Chicago-land and I began collecting pottery and ceramics at the age of seventeen.  When shopping the many local antique stores that housed a century of treasures I was always drawn to a uniquely shaped or exquisitely colored vase. I quickly learned to ask the proprietors if they had any vases from Ohio which to me meant, “Do you have any Roseville or Rookwood?” If directed to a Weller vase or worse yet, a McCoy planter I would approach it as if it were one of Cinderella’s ugly stepsisters. Yes, I must confess, I was a Roseville and Rookwood Snob!

Weller Pottery "Loru" c.1933-39 9.5" Vase with raised leaves & flared rim, $135.00 SOLD

Ah, that feels so much better! Step one, admit you have a problem!

As the years passed and with the onset of some serious pottery and fine art collecting, I was reintroduced to Weller by an antique shopkeeper in Orange, California. She helped me see the subtlety of a Weller creation, the delicate swirl of the lines and the silhouette that the potter created. She showed me the vast diversity in the Weller collections and before long I knew that Weller needed to be included in my collection of Ohio made vases, candlesticks, planters and urns. I left her shop that day with a 1930’s Weller “Bouquet” vase that to this day sits proudly on a chest of drawers in my foyer.

Weller Pottery, "Bouquet" c. 1935-39 8" vase, mold #B-3, Private Collection

Weller Pottery, c.1935-39 "Bouquet" 4.5" Bowl/vase with Pansies, Mold #B-4, $110.00, SOLD

Over the last four years through the purchases I have made for Billy Blue Eye Pottery, I have come to possess a rich appreciation for the craftsmanship and pioneering spirit shown in the many  unique techniques, glazes and formulas employed by Weller. Recently we had an opportunity to acquire a number of Weller vases created in the 1930’s from an estate which we are offering for the first time at the upcoming Long Beach Antique & Collectible Market. Some of these new acquisitions are pictured here and hopefully you too can see why I have had to take another long look at the artistry of Weller Pottery.

Weller Pottery, "Cornish" c.1933 6" Planting Pot/Vase in Blue, $165.00 SOLD

I hope that seeing some of these lovely vases has sparked a renewed or “first-time” interest for you, dear reader, in Weller Pottery.  The Weller vases pictured here  will be available this Sunday, July 18th, at the Long Beach, California  Antique & Collectible Market.  Held from 6:30 AM to 2:00 PM in the Veteran’s Stadium Parking lot, visit our green and white tent,  booth A-853.  Let me show you why I took another long look at Weller and came back with a deeper appreciation for one of the “other” Ohio pottery companies.

Weller Pottery, "Elberta" c.1930-34 5" Draped Vase in greens & pinks, $150.00, SOLD

For more information or to purchase any of these great vases, contact us directly at billyblueeye@cox.net. We accept MasterCard, Visa, Discover and Pay Pal and all orders over $200.00 are shipped free .

For additional information on the Long Beach Flea Market contact us or visit their website http://www.longbeachantiquemarket.com. We hope to see you on Sunday!

Weller Pottery, "Sydonia" c. 1928-33, 10.5" Double Vase, $150.00 SOLD

P.S.  I have also developed a deep appreciation and love for all things McCoy; but we will leave that for another day.
