This Time Mother Nature Wins! Threat of Heavy Rain & Strong Winds Keep Us from the Long Beach Flea Market Tomorrow, March 18th.

Laguna Niguel is blanketed in fog and drenched with rain on Saturday, March 17th. The forecast calls for more of the same on Flea Market Sunday.

As many of our loyal customers and fans know, we look forward to working the monthly Long Beach Flea Market. It has always been our favorite event as in the past five years we have not only met wonderful clients and assisted them in building their pottery collections, but we have also developed many cherished friendships.

In the last six months Mother Nature seems to have decided that the third Sunday of every month is a wonderful time for the skies to open up and drench the pavement at Veteran’s Stadium in Long Beach. Sometimes her threats have turned out to be just that (like last month – a finer February Sunday does not exist) and other times we have found ourselves standing in three inch puddles of water with wind driven rain finding new and creative angles to fall from the sky. (Anyone  remember this past November 20th? Well at least all of our vases, plates and candle holders were washed clean; pass the Dawn Detergent!)

"...the skies to open up and drench the pavement at Veteran's Stadium in Long Beach."

Most of the time we take Ma Nature’s threats and the TV Weather Persons promises of ….BREAKING NEWS…..The Storm of 2012 to Hit the Southland on Flea Market Sunday…in stride and usually give it the ole’ College try and set up shop under the drizzle and threatening skies.  But somehow this threat seems real and as much as we hate to give in to the hocus-pocus of weather prediction we have decided that we will not be at tomorrow’s Long Beach Flea Market.

One of our Aleppo Pine trees during a short break in today's storm.

Now for some good news.  Since the weather will keep us from setting up shop in Long Beach tomorrow, we are going to launch our first Virtual Flea Market at this website tomorrow morning beginning at 7:00 AM. We will offer to you all of the new acquisitions we have purchased for tomorrow’s event here at BillyBlueEye.com. Additionally all merchandise offered tomorrow will be available for purchase at 25% off the ticketed price and we’ll professionally box and ship the items free of charge!

So set you clocks, Pottery fans. No need to pull out the yellow slicker or grab the galoshes, come shop Billy Blue Eye’s Virtual Flea Market from the comfort and warmth of your dry home tomorrow morning. More information will be posted later today as well as advance postings of some of the terrific treasures we will be offering. We look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

Selling the “Blues” at the Long Beach Antique Market

During those lazy summer afternoons in suburban Chicago during the 1960’s when our gang of friends had settled under the Dutch Elm Tree in our front yard we’d frequently play  a question and answer game that eventually when we grew into our early teens became “truth or dare”. But in those earlier times when really knowing your best friend meant the world to you, the questions were fairly tame by today’s standards. The object of the game was to see who knew who best and by winning you could claim the title of “Best Friends” until the next round of the game was played in a few days or sometimes in a week or two.

Red Wing Pottery by Rum Rill, c.1925-1937 8.75″ Double Loop Handled Dutch Blue Stipple Glazed Fan Vase, mold #692, $130.00  SOLD

One of the questions that was frequently asked was, “What is my favorite color?”  As any one of the players that had visited my bedroom could tell you, the answer was blue;  blue walls, blue bedspread, blue curtains, blue throw rug and yes, even blue pajamas.

It should come as no surprise to you, my dear readers, that if you were to ask me today, “What is your favorite color?”, the answer would be….wait for it…can you guess….why yes, it is blue.  And again it should come as no shock to you then that in my personal collection of pottery that color is very well represented indeed.

Van Briggle Pottery, c.1940-60 9″ Twisted Handle 2.5″ Deep Bowl in Classic Ming Turquoise Glaze, $150.00 SOLD

Blue colored glazes are my personal favorite and when you visit Billy Blue Eye this Sunday, February 19th at the Long Beach Antique Market you will find a fine collection of blue ceramics available from many favorite pottery companies including Van Briggle,  Royal Haeger, Monmouth Western and of course Red Wing which under the Rum Rill pottery name offered many fine vases in the Dutch Blue Stipple Glaze some of which are pictured here.

Great Holiday Gifts at the Long Beach Antique Market Sunday, December 18th

We invite you to join us in a year-end celebration and sale at the Long Beach Antique Market this Sunday, December 18th.  All of us at Billy Blue Eye are most thankful to our faithful clients, collectors and friends that have helped to make this a terrific year.

Rum Rill (Red Wing) Pottery, c.1930’s 7″ Dutch Blue Stippled Vase, Mold #630, $115.00 SOLD

We began 2011 by setting up a  booth for the first time at the Del Mar Antique Show & Sale held on the beautiful Del Mar Fairgrounds. The three day event introduced us to our neighbors to the south in San Diego County and we are hopeful to include another visit  in our 2012 show schedule.

We also enjoyed the relaxed and friendly atmosphere at the spring and fall Whittier Street Fairs where we found that the love of antiques runs strong in that historic city. We set up shop at the Rose Bowl in July for the first time and were amazed at the sheer size of it all; so much to see, so many people to meet and yes so little time to shop.

“Hawaiian Hut” An Original Watercolor by James Coleman, c. 1980’s, $2,899.00

We became a “regular” vendor at the “best little Flea Market in Orange County” held in Tustin on the fourth Sunday of the month where we reconnected with some of our OC clients and of course we faithfully pitched the familiar green and white tent at the Long Beach Antique Market the third Sunday of every month.

“Hawaiian Hut” Original Watercolor by James Colemen – Close-Up View

The Long Beach show held at Veteran’s Stadium just off Lakewood Boulevard at Conant Street is open from 6:00 AM until 2:00 PM. (Visit the Long Beach Antique Market website for a discount entrance fee coupon.)  Each month we look forward to this event as it is our “favorite” show not only for the quality and quantity of great antiques and collectibles but more importantly because of the terrific people we have met and we look forward to see each time that we are there.

Beswick Pottery of England, c.1934-40 by Mr. Symcox in 1934 6.25″ Drip Glaze Bud Vase, # 193, $80.00 SOLD

So please join us at this last Long Beach show of 2011 as we celebrate the Holiday Season by bringing out our very best original artwork, ceramic and stoneware items many from our personal collections and available for a limited time only. You will find beautiful, unique gifts for that special someone at all price points. Maybe you’ll even be tempted to treat yourself to that Van Briggle vase you’ve been dreaming about. We offer a liberal exchange policy so just in case Aunt Lisa doesn’t share the same enthusiasm you have for mid-century design she’ll be able to select another ceramic turtle to add to her brood.

Red Wing Pottery, c.1950’s 10.5″ Hand painted “Accordion Man” by Belle Kogan, # B1417, $150.00 SOLD

We wish to take this opportunity to offer a sincere, heartfelt thank you to you our readers, collectors and friends for trusting us and for shopping with us when one has so many options be it virtual or brick and mortar storefronts. We wish each of you a Happy Chanukah, the Merriest of Christmases and a New Year filled with the happiness of a life filled with love, kindness and peace.
