Mid-Century Design: Has the Revival Run it’s Course?

“I’m looking for a mid-century _______________ (lamp, vase, bowl, chair, table, wall hanging, sculpture…) You can fill in the blank with your item of choice as this statement continues to be heard from customers on a regular basis.

Is it that the styling of the 1950’s and 1960’s was so magnificent that no other artistic and creative expression will do? Or is it perhaps a longing for  a time that seemed so much easier, less complex, with a very sophisticated yet funky vibe? Perhaps it is a combination of both but I sense that with the current unease in all aspects of life in the early 21st Century the revival of all things Mid-Century does bring us some sense of the familiar, (well familiar to us Baby Boomers!) and a reassurance that we are and will be okay.

Red Wing Pottery c.1953-58 11.5" Mid-Century "Starburst" Vase by Charles Murphy, $105.00 SOLD

Many of these vases, candle holders, plates and objets d’arts will be on display and available  for purchase this Sunday, October 16th at the Long Beach Flea Market.

Tustin Flea Market – June 26th Features Newly Acquired Weller, McCoy, Roseville and Van Briggle Vases

Brush-McCoy Pottery, c.1920-30's 5.75" Blended Greens & Blues Onyx Vase. Mold #749, $90.00 SOLD

Every once in awhile we stumble across some truly beautiful and unique items, usually from an unexpected source which helps to make the find even more special.  A recent shopping expedition produced a number of terrific items that will be offered for the first time this Sunday, June 26th at the Tustin Flea Market in Tustin, California, a.k.a. The Jamestown Vintage Flea Market.

Van Briggle Pottery, c. Late 1980's 8.5" Southwestern Motif Vase in Ming Turquoise Glaze by Finisher CB (Clare Beyers), $195.00 SOLD

One special find were two Weller Loru vases from the late 1930’s. When we first noticed them we were struck by how similar the glaze color was to the Mulberry Glaze being employed by Van Briggle during the same time period. I am sure it was one of those “secret glazes” that mysteriously made an appearance at a rival pottery company. Ah the espionage of the mid 1930’s pottery business!

Weller Pottery, "Loru" c.1933-39 8" Footed Vase with Raised Leaves and a Flared Rim in Mulberry Glaze, $105.00 SOLD

Weller Pottery, "Loru" c.1933-39 5" Footed Planter - Vase with Flared Rim in Mulberry Glaze, $70.00 SOLD
