Mid-Century Design: Has the Revival Run it’s Course?

“I’m looking for a mid-century _______________ (lamp, vase, bowl, chair, table, wall hanging, sculpture…) You can fill in the blank with your item of choice as this statement continues to be heard from customers on a regular basis.

Is it that the styling of the 1950’s and 1960’s was so magnificent that no other artistic and creative expression will do? Or is it perhaps a longing for  a time that seemed so much easier, less complex, with a very sophisticated yet funky vibe? Perhaps it is a combination of both but I sense that with the current unease in all aspects of life in the early 21st Century the revival of all things Mid-Century does bring us some sense of the familiar, (well familiar to us Baby Boomers!) and a reassurance that we are and will be okay.

Red Wing Pottery c.1953-58 11.5" Mid-Century "Starburst" Vase by Charles Murphy, $105.00 SOLD

Many of these vases, candle holders, plates and objets d’arts will be on display and available  for purchase this Sunday, October 16th at the Long Beach Flea Market.

Our participation today in the Long Beach Antique Market will begin our fifth year of selling at this terrific Southern California monthly event.  It has been and continues to be our favorite venue for a number of reasons. They not only run the “best Flea Market in Southern California” but they strive to make each event better and better. We are grateful to them for all of the hard work they do to make it so pleasurable for us.

Vases in Search of their Flowers

It would seem logical to me that every vase yearns for the flowers that it was meant to contain. That is after all the reason that it was created. This lump of clay was formed into a vessel, adorned and decorated, fired and finished all in preparation for the day when it would hold the blooms that it was designed to hold.

"Passionite Kisses" Roses in Blue Vase (Personal Collection)

This lovely blue vase seems satisfied that it holds a small bouquet of roses. In fact if you watch carefully it seems to be glowing, glowing with the pride of completing its purpose.

Unfortunately not all vases have the same fulfillment as our lucky vase pictured above. In fact a number of such items waiting to be fulfilled will be on display and available for purchase today at the Long Beach Antique Market.

Rookwood Pottery, c.1926 5.5" Bud Vase mold #2123, $290.00 SOLD

Rookwood Pottery, c.1929 6.5" Pinecone Bud Vase mold #1889, $300.00

Beswick Pottery of England, c.1940-72 by Mr. Watkins in 1940 12" x 10" Basket with "Rouge Royal" Interior, Mold #819, $160.00
